Hello everyone.
This is a series of
“ARTISTS WHO CHANGE THE WORLD”
The first artist for this series is a conceptual dance artist Sara Pizzi based in NYC from Italy.
When I had the interview with her, I really amazed by how thoughtful and smart she is, how important the art is to her, and how influential she will be to this society.
This is the beauty and power of art.
My impression of you is: You are so passionate and decisive in general, but at the same time, you are good at taking care of and dealing with various people. Why? & How?
This is a really accurate question for me, but I have to say that “All that glitters ain’t gold”. I struggle too. About dealing with a lot of people, I’m naturally inclined to help people, I’m generous, I’m a listener. Maybe because the goal of my life is “to inspire people”, so If I can help someone on a small scale or on a bigger scale this makes me happy and peaceful with myself. At 22 years old, I acknowledge that everyone is dealing everyday with their own battles and struggles: everyone deserves a safe place to be listened to, supported, and helped. About dealing with different schedules, employers, work partners: everyone is different, everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, everyone has different opinions and work strategy: the best role I can assume is to accommodate each person’s needs and ways to communicate to achieve the common goal in the most efficient way.
What do you want to do through your artwork? Why do you create things?
“I don’t think about art when I’m working. I think about life” as Jean Michel Basquiat said, I totally resonate with it. The reason why I create “things” is because I feel in need. The same sensation when you are in front of a mesmerizing sunset, and you feel the need to take a photo. I feel the urge to freeze a sensation-a concept and make it live longer. Giving it more space to exist, breathe, let other people see it, remember about it, think about it. So, this sensation would not live for granted. And this is what I want my art to represent: a documentary of life to preserve the hidden beauty, to let people reflect about our reality, what is in need to stay untouched, and what should be changed.
Tell me your art style
I am what I dance. My dance is my discovery of my daily range. I’m a product of society, I’m a mirror of my surroundings, I’m an on-going documentary that reminds people to not forget. My art is not beautiful, it is real. It is my social action as a reaction to this world. I don’t want to label my voice, there is nothing to identify: it is only me and my movement that express how I see the world. I can only affirm that there is observation, acceptance, diversity, listening and layers of analysis and comprehension.
You have too many projects at the same time, which I can't handle. How do you manage your schedule? Any tips?
I write down all my projects on a written paper and I see which one has the priority. I try to work on it every day according to all the other commitments I have. All the time I have available I use it to end each project: working at one project one at the time helps me to be more focused and productive. I found interesting and intriguing how the concept of time is remarkably related to the quality and productivity of work: when I feel I have too much time I tend to procrastinate and to overthink about the project. If I have too little time, I tend to let the creativity die by replacing it with the “safe place”. Finding the right balance of having enough time (not too little, not too wide) helps me to produce work with the higher quality. Regardless of the time, no matter the quantity of work, my biggest battle is to not fall into anxiety: therefore, I’ve never taken everything all at one. One thing at the time: we cannot climb a mountain all in one, we can just do one step at the time and with patience we are going to arrive at the top.
Tell me your struggles or hard things in your life. Is there something that has helped you now?
The biggest struggles in my life are confidence, lacking in love for myself, trust in my ability, and appreciating my qualities. The hardest thing in my life is repairing a broken heart, dealing with people and emotions, to not let external forces influence me in a negative way, to be my own inspiration, light and strength. Those are the things I’ve been dealing with every day since I’ve remembered and still sometimes I’m struggling. The biggest help I’m receiving to overcome those is the help and support of my beloved ones. Knowing I have a small but supportive family, a partner with whom I can share my life along with my thoughts, concerns, needs, makes my soul calm, and loved. Being surrounded by amazing, strong, and inspiring dancers, they remind me that every day everyone is dealing with their own battles, and we are here to help each other. In another hand, when it is a bad day, when people behave to me in an unclear and rude way, I arrived at the realization that it is not necessary my fault: everyone is stressed for other reasons, has their own traumas and past experiences, own battles and daily struggles, specific reasons and needs. The only way to survive is to help each other, understanding, not judging people and yourself too hard.
Why did you decide to do your artist work in NY?
I did not choose New York, this city chose me. The reason why I’m in NYC is because four years ago a talent scout deduced, I had passion and talent enough to continue and drastically improve my dance studies in one of the biggest and most dreamed cities of this world. The reason why I’m staying is because I’m feeling free to expose myself, to risk, to try, “to connect, disconnect and reconnect”. I projected my intentions and people answered, arriving after four years dancing in NYC, being surrounded by different artists who share my mission that want to create art together. Here I understood my past, I’m seeing my present and I trust in my future.
What is your dream as an artist and as a person?
My dream is to inspire people with my behavior and my art. Let people reflect, to take a moment to think, to change opinion, to question themselves or to find clarity. Making a shift. Something we are always going to need is the need for change, and I want to be part of this change. I want to remind people that something is in an urge to change, and some others will always stay the same. Remember to not forget. Forget to change. Accepting the manifestation of becoming. An art that should not give answers but create questions. Art for and to people. Extinguish the barriers between art and reality.
